About Us

The Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling (SOCCOM) program is an initiative funded by the National Science Foundation’s Division of Polar Programs. The project was launched in September 2014 with an award to Princeton University and received an additional 4 years of funding in 2019.  In 2024, SOCCOM was awarded a further 3 years of funding and administration moved to Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego. SOCCOM draws on the strengths of teams of investigators across the U.S. as well as participating in international observational and simulation efforts.

SOCCOM is supported by the National Science Foundation(Link is external) under NSF Award PLR-1425989 and OPP-1936222 and 2332379, with additional support from NOAA and NASA.
