OVERALL GOAL: the SOMIP goal is to reduce uncertainties in climate projections by defining the role of the oceans in climate with regards to the Southern Ocean, especially the role of winds, buoyancy and stratification in determining the global impacts of warming.

OBJECTIVE: Encourage the climate modeling community to use the newly created assessment tools (SOWG) by developing a protocol for an international, model intercomparison program (SOMIP).
