As SOCCOM completes its sixth year and embarks on its renewal funding, we are eager to collect our cutting-edge research in a special publication. The AGU has a new approach—the ’Special Collection’—which allows scientists to choose the most suitable AGU journal for the research. Southern Ocean and Climate: Biogeochemical and Physical Fluxes and Processes

The Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling (SOCCOM) Project was launched in 2014 with the goal of improving our understanding of the role of the Southern Ocean in climate change and biogeochemistry. SOCCOM’s circumpolar network of nearly 200 autonomous profiling floats with biogeochemical sensors and its biogeochemical Southern Ocean State Estimate (B-SOSE) are being used to describe carbon, oxygen, nutrient and productivity cycles of the Southern Ocean and their relationship to physical processes.  Analyses of mesoscale eddying coupled climate and Earth System models, including experiments with wind and freshwater forcing as well as comparison of CMIP5 and CMIP6 output, are aimed at improving our ability to model the role of the Southern Ocean in future climate. Contributions to the special collection are invited on studies that either use SOCCOM products or describe related physical and biogeochemical process studies and Earth System modeling simulations.

The collection opened for submission on July 1, 2020 and will close on June 30, 2021. Authors should submit through the GEMS site for JGR-Oceans, JAMES, GBC, GRL or AGU Advances and select the collection’s title from the drop down menu in the Special Section field of the submission form. Authors should act in a timely manner and remain responsive throughout the review process. 

Papers may cite other pending (in prep/submitted/in revision) submissions to the collection but authors should upload drafts of any unpublished work they cite (use the “Related Manuscript” file type) as part of their submission package so all the referenced work is available to the editors and reviewers.
